Think of a game of tag: the new kid grabs your hand at the exact moment the old kid lets go, one single motion. That's SN2. And if the "hand" is surrounded by a crowd (bulky groups), the tag gets much harder, that's why Prof. Kim kept saying steric hindrance slows it down.
